Hon-Tsen Yu and Yao-Sung Lin (1999) Age, reproduction, and demography of the spiny rat (Muridae: Niviventer coxingi) in subtropical central Taiwan. Zoological Studies 38(2): 153-163. Annual reproductive cycles and demographic changes in a wild population of the spiny rat (Niviventer coxingi) in central Taiwan were studied. Reproductive status of the rat was investigated by autopsy and histological examination of the testes and ovaries. Age of each animal was categorized into one of 5 age classes by examining wear patterns of the upper molars. Using the 5 age classes as a priori groupings, a discriminant function analysis on 4 body and 23 cranial measurements was used to crosscheck the reliability of the age criteria by tooth wear. The rat shows sexual dimorphism in body weight and timing of sexual maturity. However, the dimorphism is age dependent: only males of age class III or older become heavier than females, and yet females gain sexual maturity at a younger age than males. Despite climatic seasonality in its natural habitats, the rat does not have a limited breeding season. Males remain potent after sexual maturity and large proportions of males in the population breed in every season. Females breed in all seasons. Nonetheless, fewer breeding females were present in the coldest months of the year. Demographic analysis across 15 mo indicates that young rats are recruited in all seasons, supporting the conclusion that the spiny rat can breed year round. Finally, we compare features of life histories and ecological characteristics between N. coxingi and Apodemus semotus.

Phylogenetic relationships in genus Niviventer (Rodentia: Muridae) in China inferred from complete mitochondrial cytochrome b gene.
Chinese species of the genus Niviventer, predominantly distributed in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau and in Taiwan, are a diverse group and have not yet received a thorough molecular phylogenetic analysis. Here, we reconstructed the phylogenetic relationships of 32 specimens representing nine Chinese species of Niviventer, based on sequences of the complete mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. Ma...
متن کاملKaryotypes of three rat species (Mammalia: Rodentia: Muridae) from Hainan Island, China, and the valid specific status of Niviventer lotipes.
The karyotypes of three rat species from Hainan Island, China, were examined. Niviventer fulvescens (Gray, 1847) had 2n=46 and FN=64, similar to the karyotypes reported for N. fulvescens from Southeast Asia, while Niviventer lotipes () had 2n=52 and FN=66, which is distinct from the known karyotypes of other Niviventer species. Niviventer lotipes was recently considered conspecific with N. tena...
متن کاملPhylogenetic relationships in the Niviventer-Chiromyscus complex (Rodentia, Muridae) inferred from molecular data, with description of a new species
Based on molecular data for mitochondrial (Cyt b, COI) and nuclear (IRBP, GHR) genes, and morphological examinations of museum specimens, we examined diversity, species boundaries, and relationships within and between the murine genera Chiromyscus and Niviventer. Phylogenetic patterns recovered demonstrate that Niviventer sensu lato is not monophyletic but instead includes Chiromyscuschiropus, ...
متن کاملSeasonal reproduction in the Arabian spiny mouse, Acomys dimidiatus (Rodentia: Muridae) from Saudi Arabia: the role of rainfall and temperature
In deserts where unpredictable rainfall arises and a large variation in temperature occurs, this poses severe energetic and water related constraints on reproduction in small mammals and makes the use of photoperiod as cue for reproduction unreliable. In the present study, the gonad morphometrics, gonadal histology and endocrine profiles of the Arabian spiny mouse (Acomys dimidiatus) were studi...
